I remember looking into this before but remembered seeing that before I could do an jailbreaking of the console I had to downgrade my firmware to 3.50 IIRC. At the time I was exploring this I was beyond that firmware and realised the only way I could do it would be by buying a piece of equipment and doing some soldering and I thought it seemed too complicated and difficult for my skill level and I was worried I'd trash my console, so I didn't do anything about it.

I built a new PC and play all my games on that these days. However, I was wondering if things have moved on with PS3 Hacking where newer versions of the firmware could maybe be jailbroken or whether I'd still need to downgrade. If things have become easier in the past year or so I might try and do it again and start using my PS3 which has been switched off for months now. Does anyone have any advice on where to start or what to do?
I'd really appreciate that. If it can be done without soldering and just 'attaching' wires to things then I might be interested in giving it a go. I just don't want to have to go down the route of buying loads and loads of stuff and a soldering kit etc with no guarantee I'd be able to succeed. A starter's guide would be great.
That website looks full of great info but I literally don't know where to begin with it all. Have you done it to yours? I'll probably get home and discover I've gone too far with upgrading my current firmware to be able to downgrade to 3.55 lolz. I had already had a read of a slightly more up to date version of that thread on psx scene. I think what worried me is that on the OP it says: 'The Latest Firmware You Can Downgrade From Is 4.53' But I'm assuming that maybe the OP just hasn't been updated and that subsequent firmwares can be downgraded provided I have a compatible PS3 model (I do, I have one with a NOR chip)? Hopefully if my PS3 is compatible, there is no reason OFW 4.76 can't be downgraded to OFW 3.55 I was reading somewhere that for NOR, the easiest hardware to use would be E3.
I really don't want to do any soldering and saw that the E3 can be used with with a NOR clip which saves me having to solder anything to the board. I think for now I will do some research on how to downgrade using the E3 flasher and nor clip and take it from there. No doubt I will be back with more questions. Thanks for the advice so far.
Edit to say I've just found a video on Youtube that shows how to downgrade from OFW 4.76 using the E3 flasher - so it must be possible!:). Thanks again. I have ordered my E3 flasher and have found a relatively new video (2015) on Youtube going from OFW 4.55 to OFW 3.55 using the same flasher that I have bought AND the exact same model number of my phat PS3 - which is pretty lucky. The Flasher is coming from China. I ordered it from Ali Express (I know, I know) - but the feedback and reviews were very positive and seemed legit and at less than £30 it is worth the risk I think. It will probably take up to a month to arrive her in the UK from China, so in the meantime I can continue researching and making sure I know exactly what to do when it arrives. Once I have it downgraded to OFW 3.55, is the process of actually putting some CFW on there fairly straightforward?
I basically just want to be able to download PS3 games and play them on there. Not really fussed about dual booting or anything and am happy to lose use of PSN as I haven't signed int here for about 2 years. Just want to be able to play downloaded PS3 games and maybe run a Linux distro as a bonus. Can't think of much else I want it for really.
